SEW FOR YOUR MAN! THREAD CULT EPISODE #3: SEWING FOR YOUR SWEETIE

Christmas has come and gone, and another year passes without me completing a single sewing project for my husband. Sound familiar? Perhaps you too struggle with a similar, nagging guilt over not stitching your sweetie something fabulous. (Or, maybe you’re one of those bionic people who can whip out a perfect button-up in no time, in which case I congratulate (*hate*) you!)
For this third episode of Thread Cult, I teamed up with the fabulous Oonaballoona to explore the elusive question of why it’s so dang hard to sew for our significant others. We took a tour of Mood Fabrics with the knowledgeable and immensely likeable Josh (burning a swatch up top), who schooled us on men’s shirting fabrics and how to tell a poly from a rayon.
Oona gets the inside scoop on all things jersey.
In the span of an hour, Oona went from sewing her man a pimpin’ 70′s button-up to a Banana Republic-worthy jersey pullover to an exotic guayabera, and I finally figured out why I like Japanese cotton sooooo much.
Josh, our Mood salesman, also sells men’s shirts on Etsy, under the name Pseuphoric—a nice cheat for us ladies who might want to skip the heartache of stitching for our men. I like the cuffs and placket details on this one.

My brothers ask me to whip them up pants, shirts, and jackets all the time and I don’t because they don’t know/appreciate garments the way I do. I think that is something that only women get.
I think often people who don’t sew, or make things, don’t get how much time and effort is involved in doing so, so they may ask lightly not realizing what they’re actually proposing! Don’t do it unless the person will really appreciate it!
I love the shirt talk and all the fabric education! I guess I’m lucky in that my man is very colorful and knows a lot about fashion and is really open to a lot of ideas–but he won’t sit still for fitting! He also has to buy shirts usually two sizes too big so that the sleeves and neck fit. I know I’m going to make him one… one of these days!

Aw, well, shucks:) Thanks! We had fun doing this one. I think most ready-to-wear shirts are made for men shaped like squares. I bet your man would appreciate a custom tailored shirt. Maybe he could watch TV while you’re fitting him?:)

Well, I can only speak for myself….and I speaks unfortunately not:( But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen sometime soon! I will leave Oona to do her own explaining:)

i loved this episode so much! I listened as I made stuff for myself this weekend, but it totally freed me from trying to tailor my way into my man’s heart. AND THEN I MADE HIM A WALLET. Total valentines victory. Thank you!!
